Geodetic constraints on the shallow magma system at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

چکیده
[1] Ground surface tilts recorded proximal to a growing lava dome, and sustained through repeated dome collapses, provide unique geodetic constraints on the depth, size, and overpressures of the shallow magmatic system at Soufrière Hills Volcano. Tilt records identify a single pressure-source inflating with periods 3–30 h. Sustained tilt amplitude ratios for paired stations identify the pressure-source at a centroid depth between 740 and 970 m. This pressure-source and its robust oscillatory response survived a dome collapse that removed the upper 200 m of the magmatic system. Shallow overpressures of 1–4 MPa are confirmed over a radius of 200–340 m; this size suggests pressurization of a fluid-saturated fractured rock mass annulus surrounding a narrowmagma conduit.Citation: Widiwijayanti, C., A. GPS Measurement of Surface Deformation Around Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat from October 1995 to July 1996
Global Positioning System geodesy was used to measure surface deformation on Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat from October 6, 1995 to July 1, 1997 during initial dome growth and gravitational collapse. Our data from this period show non-axially symmetric horizontal displacements, and decreasing subsidence as a function of radial distance from the former topographic high of the volcanic edifi...
متن کاملPetrologic constraints on the decompression history of magma prior to Vulcanian explosions at the Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat
A series of 88 Vulcanian explosions occurred at the Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat, between August and October, 1997. Conduit conditions conducive to creating these and other Vulcanian explosions were explored via analysis of eruptive products and one-dimensional numerical modeling of magma ascent through a cylindrical conduit. The number densities and textures of plagioclase microlites we...
متن کاملControl of magma flow in dykes on cyclic lava dome extrusion
[1] Lava dome eruptions are commonly characterized by large fluctuations in discharge rate with cyclic behaviour on time-scales ranging from hours to decades. Examples include Bezymianny volcano (Russia), Merapi (Java), Santiaguito (Guatemala), Mt St Helens (USA), Mt Unzen (Japan), and Soufrière Hills volcano (Montserrat). Previous models have assumed simple cylindrical conduits for magma trans...

[1] Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurements of the surface deformation at Fernandina Volcano, Galápagos (Ecuador), acquired between January 2003 and September 2010, we study the structure and the dynamics of the shallow magmatic system of the volcano. Through the analysis of spatial and temporal variations of the measured line-of-sight displacement we identify multip...
متن کاملMagma flow instability and cyclic activity at soufriere hills volcano, montserrat, british west indies
Dome growth at the Soufriere Hills volcano (1996 to 1998) was frequently accompanied by repetitive cycles of earthquakes, ground deformation, degassing, and explosive eruptions. The cycles reflected unsteady conduit flow of volatile-charged magma resulting from gas exsolution, rheological stiffening, and pressurization. The cycles, over hours to days, initiated when degassed stiff magma retarde...
